Folk Inspired Dressing For Spring

With spring only a few weeks away, it’s time to get excited about new season dressing.

We’re lucky in Australia to have relatively mild winters, but there is still nothing better than knowing that warmer temperatures and brighter days are just around the corner. Spring is perhaps my favourite season, and it lends itself so well to trans-seasonal dressing – perfect for those of us who love layering, but still enjoy throwing on a beautiful, billowy dress and calling it a day.

One trend that has particularly grabbed my attention is folk-inspired dressing. Think intricate embroidery, tassels, beautifully rich ochres and burgundy, and delicate jewellery adorned with beading and charms. It’s an easy way to give your wardrobe an effortless, bohemian update that’s both chic and laidback. The beautiful, lightweight linens and cottons are also a perfect transition into the warmer months to come, and sure to become wardrobe favourites.

Here are a few of my tips for embracing the look:

1. Balance it out

Play with proportions and balance a floaty blouse with a tailored trouser, or cinch in a voluminous dress at the waist for a little more definition. I love pairing an off-shoulder blouse back with jeans, trousers or a full length skirt to accentuate my shoulders and draw in the waist.

2. Step it up

If you’re feeling a little overwhelmed by more fluid, oversized shapes, add a heel or a wedge to create some height and elongate your legs. Look for tie-up straps that draw attention to the ankle, creating the appearance of even more length.

3. Don’t be afraid to accessorise

Because you can never have too many tassels… opt for fine, minimal accessories with a hint of folk. The petite tassel earrings, necklace and bangle with charm details are all favourites for adding a subtle lift to an outfit. If you’re leaning towards a more structured or simple ensemble, like this white blouse paired back with shorts and a casual jacket, consider adding a more statement piece, like this beaded cuff.
