Fashion Trade: My Key Three Looks For AW16

Styling the old with the new for Country Road & Australian Red Cross.

It's around the time of year in Sydney when the cold has started to set in that I find myself asking that age old question, “what should I wear!?” I have always been a big believer in classic and investment pieces, so when I heard about Country Road's Fashion Trade initiative with a great charity here in Australia, Red Cross, I thought it was time to get involved. The premise is fairly simple – donate your old Country Road clothing and accessories to your local store, and receive a $10 voucher to use in store for every piece donated (plus an entry to win one of five $500 gift cards). Not only is it a great way to help clear out your wardrobe, ready for the new season, but you're also helping a great charity and doing your part to make fashion more sustainable.

So... Where to get started? Firstly it's about working out which pieces to hold on to - this should come down to a combination of aesthetics and practicality. You can never go wrong with great outerwear, so whilst exploring the Country Road archives, I decided to choose two coats and one jacket to style back with my new season picks.

Look 1 – Smart Casual

I chose this navy wool peacoat from the archives to break up all the black I usually wear in winter. It appealed to the Francophile in me too! With that in mind, I decided to pair it back with crisp white denim, a contrast stripe shirt and suede ankle boots from the new season. Don't be afraid to wear white in Winter – it instantly freshens up any outfit, and in this case it also makes the navy pop.

Look 2 – Weekend Casual

From my Saturday morning coffee run, to lunch with friends and afternoon errands, I like my weekends to be stylish, but still effortless. This archived black cape with trench detailing was a clear favourite - it's easy, comfortable and pairs back perfectly with your wardrobe essentials. Black and white basics are always a staple in my closet, so I decided to work this back with new black slim leg denim and a pair of white sneakers.

Look 3 – Work Week

When I'm not in the office, I'm usually running around between events, shows and appointments. With every day being so varied, I opt for looks that are classic and versatile, like this slim fit archival blazer paired back with a simple white tee and culottes. The key here is balancing the proportions, the jacket is more tailored and the culottes more relaxed which makes the ensemble polished enough for the office, but not too corporate. Look to minimal new season accessories, like these pointed flats or fine gold necklace and earrings for a finishing touch.
